Facebook ad measurement: separate clicks from business outcomes

A low cost per click can look attractive. But when the goal is a qualified enquiry or a sale, a click is only one step. Evaluate the campaign objective alongside the outcome the business actually needs.
In short
- Record the objective, measured action, period and spend at the top of every report.
- Evaluate cost per result together with result quality; classify the enquiries.
- Do not make firm revenue conclusions without explaining attribution and tracking.
- Close the report with a proposed change and an owner.
Put the objective at the top of the report
Objective and measured action
Meta structures advertising objectives around different business goals. A reported ‘result’ therefore does not represent the same action in every campaign. Record the objective, measured action, period and spend before comparing performance.
Expectations by objective
An awareness campaign and a sales campaign should not automatically be expected to produce the same behaviour. Decide what job the ad should do, then select indicators suited to that job.
Assess quality as well as cost
What does the result mean?
Before interpreting cost per result, establish what the result is: a click, form or verified purchase? A large number of cheap enquiries may offer little value if they do not fit the business. Keep platform counts distinct from business-validated outcomes.
Review the enquiries
Review submitted forms with the sales team’s assessment. Classify duplicate, unreachable or unsuitable enquiries appropriately, without unnecessarily sharing personal information. Explain the assessment method in the report.
Record conversion context
What attribution cannot explain
How an action is included in an ad report depends on measurement and attribution. Attribution links a result to an ad under specified rules; it does not by itself establish that the ad caused it. Check current account settings rather than assuming one configuration applies everywhere.
Double-counting risk
Platform reporting, site analytics and order records may count differently. Adding conversions claimed by different platforms can double-count outcomes. Avoid firm revenue conclusions without explaining tracking, data permissions and the reporting period.
End with a decision and an owner
Decision and follow-up
Specify what should change: the message, landing page, form questions or creative treatment. Record the observation behind the decision and what the next review will examine. Too many simultaneous changes can make learning harder.
